The Universidade Lusófona results from the integration of the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and the Universidade Lusófona do Porto, giving rise to two university centers (Lisbon and Porto) whose objectives are, since its inception, “teaching, research in the various fields of science, culture and technologies, in an interdisciplinary perspective and, especially, for the development of the countries and peoples of the Portuguese language”.
The history of Universidade Lusófona began in 1998 with the merger of ISMAG – Higher Institute of Applied Mathematics and Management, a university institute, and ISHT – Higher Institute of Humanities and Technology, a polytechnic institute, both founded in 1989 by the same founding entity of Universidade Lusófona, COFAC and the subsequent acquisition of the premises of the Universidade Moderna do Porto, which gave rise to Universidade Lusófona do Porto.
The Universidade Lusófona is the largest private university in Portugal. The entity legally responsible for the management and development of the University is COFAC – Cooperativa de Formação e Animação Cultural, a non-profit educational entity with facilities in Lisbon, Portugal, which is currently the largest non-profit, non-state-funded educational organization in Portugal. The name of the University comes from the word “Lusofonia” which denotes all the Portuguese-speaking countries and their common linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
